Maybe we DID get Zawahiri

January 19, 2006

Either UBL, or a voice impersonator (since, once again, he wouldn't show his face) today offered us a chance to do what he says, in return for calling off the attack he says he's planning for us. I'm sure we're all sweating on cue. Now, I know Al Qaida thinks Bush is dumb; all the liberals say that. But you'd think that even they would have figured out by now that, whatever else Bush may be, he's not inclined to cave. The polls that "Osama" mentions by themselves show that, if Bush wanted a good excuse to give it up, he already had a politically expedient one. Just ask Jack Murtha.

It wouldn't be all that interesting, in fact, except for the timing, coming as it does right on the heels of our strike on the edge of Pakistan, which their government now admits got 4 Al Qaida leaders. Tantalizingly, they name 3 of them. Together with the fact that Zawahiri hasn't sent out a communique that he is alive, and the likelihood that the Pakistanis aren't withholding the name of the 4th man just because we wouldn't recognize it anyway, it's a thing that makes you go "hmm." When you add to it the fact that they want us to think Osama just happens to have chosen this moment to get back to us after all the time that it's been, you really have to wonder about the identity of that unnamed stiff.

As the official scoreboard shows, it hasn't been a great week for the AQ boys; even the 3 named guys are not exactly small fish. One was supposed to be their foremost chemical weapons man. And it's not particularly likely, as I suggested, that the guy they won't name is a smaller fish than that. So we hit them hard. That UBL, who, if alive, had certainly been letting his boy Ayman do all the talking lately, should now rush out an invitation for us to take the Democrats' advice and surrender already, right when it would do Zawahiri some good to say it himself, is promising.

Maybe they haven't found a convincing enough Zawahiri voice-double yet. If we soon get a voice-only tape from him too, well...
