Iran continues to play its hand badly
February 4, 2006
The IAEA finally got around to referring Iran to the UN Security Council this morning. Unlikely as it may seem, only 3 countries on the 35 nation board voted no (Syria, Cuba, and Venezuela – whatta surprise) and 5 abstained. Not bad at all. What was not a surprise, though, was the Iranians’ angry response: They immediately claimed they would go to full enrichment, about which I can only say, ‘as if.’ In addition, they declared the Russian proposal to handle enrichment for them, dead.
It never ceases to astound me how stupid the wannabe rulers of the world always think we are; Assuming, as I do, that Iran is negotiating in bad faith, as caution dictates we must in any case, these are actions that didn’t need to be declared, since neither is a change. In reverse order, who seriously thought the Russian proposal to handle enrichment for the Iranians was going anywhere? It was, after all, predicated on a belief that the Iran was sincere in its claim that it only wanted nuclear power to make electricity. The stated rejection itself puts that notion to bed.
As to going to full speed enrichment, that this was going on already was assumed all along, as well. The idea that they were somehow holding back was always just a ploy to play to the western countries that wanted to sit on their hands and do nothing. That the gambit has now failed means that there’s no longer any reason to make believe.
It seems clear that these actions, while they may feel good to the angry Iranians, will not help save their country’s nuke ambitions, and will in fact only speed its destruction. The latter stands as proof, if any were still needed by anyone, that the goal really is weapons, which can only help the diplomatic effort from our point of view. As to the former, well, it will only serve to diminish the time we’re willing to let the process drag out, and make the eventual end action easier to justify to the mealy-mouthed peacenicks who will eventually howl about our ‘act of aggression.’
We know how it ends already. Let’s get down to it.
