Illegal immigration in Mexico

April 19, 2006

Have you heard? Mexican police have gunned down a man they thought was a Central American illegal immigrant.

For myself, I didn't know Mexico HAD immigrants, but then I suppose that there are people in this world so impoverished, that even migration to Mexico represents a step in the right direction. But that's not really the point. My point is that Mexico is the country whose president lectures us that there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant, in the USA, at least, because all people have the right of movement and so on. And yet, look: when they think they have a line on someone moving to their own country, THEY SHOOT HIM. From the article:

Mexican police killed a man near Mexico City in a raid on illegal immigrants from Central America, sparking the anger of local residents, who overturned and smashed two immigration service trucks.

So it turns out that, not only does Mexico, the country of "no immigrant is illegal", have immigration police, but they send them on raids. And we're being cruel and uncivilized for having citizens who care enough about our borders that they monitor them for illegal crossings on their own initiative.

And never mind that it wasn't even true -- the victim was in fact a local construction worker who, because of his dark skin, the Mexican police figured had to be an illegal alien. Don't believe me? Read the article. You just can't make this stuff up, as I always say:

Local residents said the victim, Robert Lugo, was a construction worker whose dark skin and work clothes likely made him appear to be an illegal immigrant. Witnesses said Lugo was shot at close range and was not running from police or trying to confront them.

But there are other things Mexico has that you may not have heard of. Did you know that if you are foreign born in Mexico, you cannot publicly protest, under penalty of jail and deportation? So if we took advantage of the turnabout-is-fair-play tactic of assembling a group of Americans to go to Mexico City to make a stink about Mexico's draconian immigration laws, as their nationals are doing here, our folks would be not just sent home, but jailed first.

Did you also know that, if you immigrate to Mexico, stay for many years, and eventually even become a citizen, YOU STILL CAN NEVER VOTE THERE? That's right. Only native born citizens can vote in Mexico, not naturalized ones. Remember that as American states and municipalities try to give illegal immigrants the right to vote to pad the Democrat rolls. Don't believe it? There were Democrat party canvassers at the recent protests, trying to sign up the protesters to vote their side. What there was NOT, was immigration agents seeing if any protesters were here illegally. We can't even summon the will to take the common sense action of sending people to ask the protesters if they have green cards. Ask yourself this: What if a large club of drag racing enthusiasts declared, in advance and in the press, that on May 1st, they would convene on the New York State Thruway, between exits 39 and 45, to hold drag races. Do you think the police would go? I think so, too. You see, speeding is illegal. When the police know, in advance, that there will be a crime committed, because the law-breakers announce their intentions in advance, they usually go there to catch them. You could even say that they should. Let's see if they do it on May first at the well-announced illegal immigrant protests; Just to check for papers and take into custody any people who are breaking our laws, now: Nobody is saying they ought to SHOOT the illegals, though, like they do in Mexico.
