They'll never learn
December 20, 2005
Remember when the 20 year old DWI revelation on the eve of the 2000 election was going to torpedo Bush's chances? Remember when Al Gore was going to sue his way past GWB? Remember when Bush's tax cuts were going to destroy the economy? Remember when the UN was going to keep Bush from going to war in Iraq? Remember when mass protests were going to keep Bush from invading Iraq? Remember when the tens of thousands of GI deaths in Iraq were going to make Bush radioactive? Remember when the nation was surely going to react to all the Bush trouble by throwing the GOP out of congress in 2002? Remember when Mondale was going to lead the Dems back to control of the Senate? Remember when the shocking GOP success in the 2002 election was going to torpedo the stock market? Remember when Kerry was going to ride his Viet Nam days to the White House? Remember when the Mapes/Rather memoes were going to torpedo Bush's re-election chances?
Remember when the war casualty count reaching 2000 was going to sink Bush? Remember when Cindy Sheehan was going to ruin Bush? Remember when Abu Ghraib was going to be the end of Bush for sure? Remember when Iraq was going to sink into Shiite mullahcracy? Remember when the Sunnis were NEVER going to climb aboard the political system and go to the polls? Remember when Fitzgerald was going to get Karl Rove? Remember when Katrina was going to finally be the end of Bush? Remember when the Myers flap was going to sink Bush once and for all? Remember when Bush's numbers were going to fall through the 30s to the 20s? Remember when the Dems were SURELY going to take back the Congress next year? Remember when Murtha was finally going to sink Bush?
The latest in the long and ignominous line of "this time, for SURE!" things that will finally finish Bush off politically, is the revelation that Bush actually authorized the NSA to listen in on the international phone calls of 30-odd suspected Al Qaida operatives. That's right: The Democrats have apparently decided that complaining about a thing like that will make Bush look bad.
I suppose that in one sense, it shouldn't surprise me -- after all, they're the party led by a guy who thought it was a good idea to tell God and everybody that the notion that we would win in Iraq was 'just plain wrong', and right before the citizens of that country went to the polls to elect a new government to go with their new constitution; The party whose leader in the House, right after a 403-3 vote against pulling out immediately, went on TV to say that she nevertheless agreed with Murtha, as did most of her fellow Dem reps, but only 'privately'.
At what point can we stop pretending to take these guys seriously, and just greet whatever they say with open guffaws?
